Write the letter - Pick a time in the future: 5,10,15 or 20 years from now or any number of years - longer or shorter - that's meaningful for you. Date the top of the letter withe the imaginary future date.
Imagine the intervening years have passed and you are writing to a friend (pick someone you know and like in the present time). Use the friends name "Dear (friend name)" OR if you prefer, pick some other supportive person to whom you can imagine writing to comfortably.
Imagine that, in this future, you've resolved whatever problems are troubling you at the present time. Describe what helped you resolve those problems. At the time of the letter writing, you're living a wonderful, joyous, healthy and satisfying life. Describe how you are spending your time, where. you are living, your relationships, beliefs and reflections on the past and future.
How to use the letter - Now you've completed the letter, what did you learn? What did you include in the letter that's not yet happening in your life? What would be the smallest step in your actual behaviour or reactions that you could take towards making one of those things begin to happen? When do you want to try that first small step?
For best results –“horses for courses” applies. Some might find one tool or technique helpful, others will experiment with another that proves helpful. All are available to try and it’s often about finding “what works” for you.
